General Description

Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital (JHACH) in St. Petersburg, Florida is seeking a Research Director of the Maternal, Fetal & Neonatal Institute (MFNI).  JHACH is a 259-bed teaching hospital, ranked as a U.S. News & World Report Best Children's Hospital (2022-2023) in multiple pediatric specialties and the #1 Children's Hospital in the Tampa Bay region. JHACH is the only US hospital outside the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. location that is part of the Johns Hopkins Medicine system.   

The JHACH MFNI encompasses Maternal Fetal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Neonatal Perinatal Medicine, with special focus on high-risk fetal and neonatal care.  The ideal candidate for this position will possess expertise in clinical and/or translational research. In collaboration with the Institute Director/Chair of Maternal, Fetal and Neonatal Medicine, the Research Director will oversee all research programming within Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital's MFNI. In addition, the Director will work closely with core research faculty and advance our institution's academic mission, innovation, and growth. The Research Director will support and partner with hospital and university leadership and community stakeholders to create a robust research environment that promotes the growth and development of clinical and translational research within Maternal, Fetal and Neonatal Medicine.The Director will be a board-certified neonatologist, perinatologist, obstetrician/gynecologist, or a senior clinical and/or translational scientist with a well-established record of academic scholarship, and will be appointed faculty in Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Design, plan, and execute independent research in area of expertise.
  • Develop and implement a vision for program development, including building a clinical and translational research program within the MFNI.
  • Seek funding to support independent research and the MFNI research program.
  • Assist in development of clinical scientists to create the MFNI research unit.
  • Oversee the MFNI research team including investigators, biostatistician, data manager, research nurse(s), and others.
  • Serve as a mentor and guide for junior faculty within the institute on research projects throughout the projects' life cycles.
  • Promote scientific discussion within the Institute/community and contribute to research initiatives.
  • Facilitate connections with external stakeholders, e.g., investigators and vendors. Contribute to building relationships with significant external partnerships/institutions (e.g., business alliance partners, academic institutions) in order to advance clinical studies and programs.
  • Lead the MFNI Research Council in partnership with core research faculty, including prioritization efforts across the portfolio and ensuring research progress on deliverables and data interpretation/review.
  • Participate in national and international research organizations and venues.

The MFNI Research Director will be accountable for the clinical and translational scientific aspects of the MFNI. This will include collaborative endeavors regarding the biorepository, laboratory, and clinical research related to the institute. He/she will engage in activities to encourage and foster investigator engagement.

Qualifications

  • MD required, additional PhD or Master's degree is desirable.
  • 5 relevant years' experience in clinical and translational research, with a strong track record of research productivity with respect to publication and funding.
  • The ideal candidate will have expertise in hypothesis generation, study design, study implementation, analysis, and interpretation of study results.
