General Description

Adjunct Instructor and Temporary Focus Area Leads (multiple areas: Entrepreneurship Education, TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), and STEM Education)

The International Teaching and Global Leadership master's program within the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Education is accepting applications for adjunct instructors to teach graduate level courses, advise students, and lead focus areas in Entrepreneurship Education, TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), and STEM Education.  Launched in the fall of 2018, ITGL is an 11-month, in-person Master of Science in Education program designed to prepare international educators to become innovative education leaders with the knowledge and skills to transform schools, systems, and other fast-changing learning environments around the world.

Successful candidates will teach face-to-face courses in the designated focus areas, facilitate sections of the teacher leadership seminar, serve as the faculty advisor to focus area students in the focus area, and participate in faculty meetings and admissions activities.  This is a contract position for fall semester 2023 with the possibility of extension for spring and summer semesters for Entrepreneurship Education & TEFL; the STEM adjunct instructor and area lead role is for fall 2023, spring 2024, and summer semesters 2024.

Responsibilities:

  1. Course Delivery: Design and deliver lectures, presentations, and practical demonstrations to convey course material effectively. Develop lesson plans, assignments, and assessments that align with the curriculum and learning objectives.
  2. Classroom Management: Foster an inclusive and engaging learning environment. Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, discussion, and critical thinking.
  3. Student Support: Provide guidance and support to students inside and outside of the classroom. Address individual student concerns and offer academic assistance as needed.
  4. Grading and Evaluation: Assess and grade student assignments, exams, and projects promptly and fairly. Provide constructive feedback to aid students' learning and development.
  5. Curriculum Development: Collaborate with the department and full-time faculty to update and improve course materials and curriculum, incorporating relevant area advancements and academic research.
  6. Student Advising: Advise, support, and mentor students in their portfolio, extended learning activities, academic success, and post-graduation plans.
  7. Administrative and Committee work: Fulfill administrative responsibilities such as maintaining submitting grades and other necessary paperwork. Participate in program and department meetings. Serve as focus area lead in admissions work including meetings, application review, and student outreach.
  8. Adherence to Policies: Comply with institutional policies, academic regulations, and ethical standards in all aspects of teaching and interactions with students.

 

 

Qualifications

  • Educational Background: A minimum of a master's degree in the relevant or associated field is typically required. Doctoral degree preferred.
  • Expertise: Possess in-depth knowledge and expertise in the subject area of instruction. Prior teaching experience is required.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and presentation abilities to effectively convey complex concepts and engage students in the learning and advising process.
  • Flexibility: Demonstrate adaptability and openness to different teaching approaches to meet the diverse needs of students. Commitment to serving a culturally diverse student body.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and staff in a collegial, supportive, and advisory manner.
  • Time Management: Efficiently manage time and resources to fulfill teaching responsibilities while maintaining other professional commitments if applicable.
  • Commitment to social justice.
  • Previous experience teaching international students is not required, but is preferred.
