The Johns Hopkins University, Department of Emergency Medicine, Division of Special Operations is seeking a qualified and motivated physician to join the Division as a Tactical Medicine fellow starting July 1, 2025. The Tactical Medicine Fellowship is a two-year, non-ACGME accredited, Advanced Specialty Training Program (ASTP) in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, located in Baltimore, Maryland.
The fellowship is designed to provide emergency physicians with a comprehensive educational experience in the complex nature of tactical and operational medicine. The fellowship program focuses on mentorship in physician leadership, medical control, and on-scene medical support through partnerships with multiple local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The program offers direct field experience in tactical, protective, and special event environments.
Responsibilities of the Tactical Medicine Fellow include assisting with both online and offline medical control of supported agencies, continuous quality improvement and program development, education and training of law enforcement pre-hospital clinicians, academic research within the field of law enforcement medicine, and on-scene medical coverage across Maryland and the United States. In addition, the fellow has a clinical requirement of 800 hours per academic year as an attending emergency physician. Potential clinical sites include the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center.
Candidates must have demonstrated prior interest and engagement in pre-hospital emergency medical care and/or tactical medicine. Prior scholarly activities are highly favorable. Due to the nature of the program, applicants must be able to pass a criminal background investigation and be eligible for a United States national security clearance. In addition, applicants must possess the psychomotor skills and physical fitness to operate in austere environments.

We still require all faculty, staff, and students to receive the seasonal flu vaccine. Exceptions to the COVID and flu vaccine requirements may be provided to individuals for religious beliefs or medical reasons. Requests for an exception must be submitted to the JHU vaccination registry. This change does not apply to the School of Medicine (SOM). SOM hires must be fully vaccinated with an FDA COVID-19 vaccination and provide proof of vaccination status. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
