General Description

The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) unit of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences seeks adjunct faculty to teach in the areas of energy systems and earth systems modeling, techno-economic modeling, and modeling of the electric grid. Positions are available for both classroom and online instructors. As the nation's oldest and one of the most prestigious research universities, Johns Hopkins offers high-quality master's degrees and post-baccalaureate education to students located in the greater Baltimore and Washington, D.C. regions and throughout the United States and abroad.

The Advanced Academic Programs division provides high-quality master's degrees and post-baccalaureate education to students in the mid-Atlantic region and online. AAP currently offers master's degrees and graduate certificate programs for graduate students at its Washington, DC Center as well as in Montgomery County and Baltimore, MD, and online. AAP enrolls more than 3000 part-time graduate students and is looking to aggressively grow its programs.

We invite applications to fill an opening for a non-tenure-track, adjunct teaching position. The adjunct faculty will teach one or more courses per year in the above topics in either an onsite, online or combined format.

The following fields are preferred:

  • Nuclear Energy and Policy
    • This course provides an overview of the nuclear power program, including new technology concepts (e.g. small modular reactor) as well as associated policy and regulation.
  • The Electric-grid: Technology and Policy
    • This course provides an overview of the electric power grid and will cover the important issues including: an introductory of electric power systems, the conversion to mechanical energy, the grid concept, smart grids, electric storage systems, electric transportation, electric energy services and demand. Both USA and global electric energy policies will be covered.
  • Communicating Energy and Climate Change policy
    • This course will introduce you to a growing literature on the use of social science research in informing and evaluating climate change and energy policies. Understanding some of the terms and concepts used in social science research will help you critically evaluate research commissioned by the organizations for which you work, or even just survey toplines reported by the media
  • Energy and Climate Finance
    • This course provides an introduction to attributes of the financial sector through its analysis of markets for environmental commodities. Students learn the economic theory behind market-based environmental policy instruments, such as tradable renewable energy credit, carbon offset, and water rights.
  • Cities and Climate Change
    • A course covering energy demands of cities and the potential for alternative energy production in the urban context. The course would include exploring local-level government climate policy options, including land use policies, building practices, green infrastructure, city-owned power facilities, local level offsets, and urban-based clean development mechanisms.
  • Climate Change Policy Analysis
    • This course analyzes current policy options or mitigating and adapting to long-term climate change. The course will examine various approaches available in the US for national-level policy, including the regulatory approach and the market-based approaches, particularly cap and trade and carbon taxation.
  • Fuel Cell Technology
    • The science, engineering, economics, and environmental impacts hydrogen fuel cell and electrochemical technologies will be covered. The student will also analyze energy supply chains, energy systems, the fundamental physics and engineering, techno-economics (TEA), and life cycle (LCA) for these technologies and competing ones


The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in a relevant field, with a master's degree being a minimum, but a Ph.D. preferred. Teaching experience, especially online and with professional students, and work experience within the relevant science fields are also desired. A successful candidate would ideally be able to begin teaching in September 2018. College-level teaching experience is required and a proven record of effective online teaching and familiarity with Blackboard (or a similar learning management system) are strong advantages. The applicant should also have the background to teach a wide variety of courses in the greater energy and climate policy fields.
