General Description

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health invites applications from individuals with research expertise in tick-borne diseases for the Director of a new institute, the Lyme and Tick-borne Disease Institute for Research and Education. This academic tenure-track faculty position will have a primary appointment in the W. Harry Feinstone Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology.

The Director will be expected to recruit new faculty whose research is focused on a range of tick-borne diseases including Lyme disease, and to expand and coordinate existing institutional research efforts while maintaining a vibrant basic science research program. The Institute will house a tick-rearing and research facility capable of accommodating BSL2 microorganisms, and take advantage of existing laboratory and research-based projects focused on vector-borne diseases. The goal of this position is to spearhead innovative basic and applied research that will lead to the control of these important diseases and complement and synergize with ongoing translational research in the School of Medicine.

The Bloomberg School of Public Health is the #1 ranked school of public health and is the largest school of public health in the country. The W. Harry Feinstone Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology has more than 50 full-time faculty offering interdisciplinary research with many collaborative programs. The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has an established clinical translational research program based in the Lyme Disease Research Center in the Department of Medicine. The Lyme Disease Research Center has a long history of joint projects with the Bloomberg School of Public Health and there will be significant opportunities for future collaboration between the two institutions.


The Director must have a doctoral degree and an established record of research and education in Lyme or other tick-borne diseases, although we will also consider individuals with interest in the problem who have outstanding records of research in microbiology, immunology or tick biology.

  • The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
